What a thermostat replacement involves
We start at the equipment, not the wall. A technician confirms the old thermostat is actually the problem by checking control voltage, the wiring at the air handler or furnace board, and whether the low-voltage fuse has blown. If the control is the fault, we shut power down, label every conductor, remove the old unit, and mount the new one level on the wall. Then we configure it for your system type, run a heating and cooling cycle, and watch the temperature swing to make sure the readings match what the equipment is doing.
What we check and what we install
We look at the wire count first, because a lot of homes in the region were built with four or five conductors and no common wire, which most modern controls need. Where there is no C wire, we either pull new wire or fit an adapter at the board. We check the thermostat location for sun exposure, a nearby supply vent, or draft from a wall cavity, since all three cause false readings. We install standard programmable and smart controls, plus multi-stage and heat pump compatible models with proper auxiliary heat staging.
How we decide replacement is the right call
Repair is not usually an option with a thermostat, so the decision is about whether the thermostat is the cause at all. A blank display can be a tripped float switch, a blown low-voltage fuse, or a broken wire in the attic, and swapping the control fixes none of that. We test for those first. If the thermostat is reading several degrees off after calibration, if it will not hold a setpoint, or if it cannot stage your equipment correctly, we recommend replacement and explain why before we touch anything.

Can I keep my old thermostat wiring with a new smart control?
Often yes, if you have a common wire. Many older homes in our service area do not. In that case we either run a new conductor or install an adapter at the equipment board so the control has steady power.
Why did my new thermostat stop working right after installation?
Usually a low-voltage fuse on the control board, a loose conductor, or a safety switch that opened because of a clogged condensate drain. We test the circuit and the drain rather than assume the thermostat itself failed.
Does the thermostat location matter?
A great deal. A thermostat in direct sun, above a lamp, near a supply vent, or on an exterior wall reads the wrong temperature and makes your system short cycle. We will tell you if relocating it makes more sense.
