What a mini-split repair call looks like
We start at the head that is misbehaving, not the outdoor unit, because most ductless faults show up indoors first. We pull the filters, look at the blower wheel and coil, read the error code the board is reporting, and check the drain line and condensate pump. Then we move outside to the condenser and the line set. A mini-split is one connected system, so we test the communication between indoor and outdoor sections rather than guessing at one half of it.
What we check on the system
Common findings include clogged condensate drains, filthy blower wheels that cut airflow to almost nothing, failed indoor fan motors, bad thermistors that make the head read the room wrong, and control boards damaged by a power surge. Outside we inspect the reversing valve, contactor, capacitor and fan motor, plus fin damage from hail, which we see plenty of across the region. We also verify the line set insulation and flare connections, since a slow leak at a flare is a frequent repeat offender.
How we decide repair is the right call
We weigh the age of the system, which part failed, and whether parts are still available for that model. A drain clog, a capacitor or a fan motor is a straightforward repair on almost any unit. A failed inverter board or compressor on an older multi-zone system is a different conversation, and we will lay out both paths plainly. Why is only one of my mini-split heads not cooling?
Usually a problem in that zone rather than the whole system. A clogged filter, a failed indoor fan motor, a bad thermistor or a stuck zone valve are all common. We test that head and its line individually.
Water is dripping from the indoor unit. Is that serious?
It means the condensate is not draining, normally from a clogged drain line, a sagging line or a failed pump. Turn the head off at the remote to stop the drip and call us before the wall stains.
What does the blinking light on my mini-split mean?
It is an error code the board is reporting, and the pattern differs by manufacturer. Note how many blinks and on which light, then tell us. It gives us a head start on diagnosing the fault.
