What ignitor and flame sensor repair involves
A hot surface ignitor glows to light the burners, and the flame sensor confirms the flame is actually there. If the sensor cannot prove flame within a few seconds, the control board shuts the gas off on purpose. That is the short-cycling many homeowners describe as the furnace "trying and quitting." We watch a full ignition sequence, read the board's fault history, and measure what the sensor is reporting so we replace the part that is failing instead of guessing at both.
What we check and what we install
We check the ignitor for cracks and correct resistance, inspect its position over the burner, and clean or replace the flame sensor depending on its condition and signal strength. We also look at the things that make these parts fail early: a clogged filter starving airflow, a blocked return, weak gas pressure, a cracked wire harness, or a rusting burner assembly. When a part is replaced we use the correct match for your furnace, then run the system through several cycles before we leave.
How we decide it is the right call
Symptoms overlap, so we test rather than assume. A furnace that never attempts ignition usually points somewhere else, like a pressure switch, a control board, or no gas at all. A furnace that lights then drops out points at the sensor or the flame path. If the heat exchanger or burner condition makes repair unwise, we say so plainly and lay out your options. If you ever smell gas, leave the house, call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us.

How long does a flame sensor last?
Several years is typical, though soot and oxidation build up on the tip over time and weaken the signal. Regular filter changes and an annual heating tune-up catch a fading sensor before it leaves you without heat on a cold night.
Can I clean the flame sensor myself?
We do not recommend it. Reaching the sensor means opening the burner compartment around gas and high-voltage components. Safe homeowner checks stop at the thermostat, breaker, filter and vents. Call us and we will handle the rest safely.
Is it worth repairing an older furnace?
Often yes, since ignitors and flame sensors are straightforward repairs. We factor in the age of the unit, the condition of the burners and heat exchanger, and how often it has needed heating repair, then give you a clear recommendation.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on your porch help us arrive with the right parts.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, the indoor coil and blower, then the outdoor unit and electrical side. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why it failed.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We walk you through the fix and any parts involved before we start. Once you say go, we make the repair and confirm the system is holding temperature before we leave your driveway.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for hard summersWe work on attic air handlers in July heat, undersized returns in older subdivisions, and condensers with hail-flattened fins. Those are everyday jobs across the region, so we know where these systems tend to give out first.
- Air conditioner repair and heating repairOne crew for both seasons. Air conditioning repair when the house won't cool, heater repair and furnace repair when the burners won't stay lit. Same technicians, same records, so nobody starts from scratch in November.
- We explain the failureYou hear which component failed and what it was doing to the rest of the system. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging unit, we say so and let you decide the timing.
- Respect for the houseDrop cloths, shoe covers, and the attic hatch closed the way we found it. We keep the work area clean and we tell you honestly when a problem is airflow or ductwork rather than the equipment itself.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
