What ignitor and flame sensor repair involves
A hot surface ignitor glows to light the burners, and the flame sensor confirms the flame is actually there. If the sensor cannot prove flame within a few seconds, the control board shuts the gas off on purpose. That is the short-cycling many homeowners describe as the furnace "trying and quitting." We watch a full ignition sequence, read the board's fault history, and measure what the sensor is reporting so we replace the part that is failing instead of guessing at both.

How long does a flame sensor last?
Several years is typical, though soot and oxidation build up on the tip over time and weaken the signal. Regular filter changes and an annual heating tune-up catch a fading sensor before it leaves you without heat on a cold night.
Can I clean the flame sensor myself?
