Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle problems across Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, so your outdoor unit sheds ice instead of freezing into a solid block. Call us if you see a coating of frost or ice that never clears, hear the unit run without warm air inside, or notice the system flipping to emergency heat on a cold morning. In the meantime, change a dirty filter, check that vents are open and clear leaves or snow away from the outdoor cabinet. Then let us look at the controls and sensors.

What A Defrost Cycle Repair Involves

A heat pump pulls heat out of cold outdoor air, and the outdoor coil naturally collects frost while it does that. The defrost cycle is supposed to interrupt heating for a few minutes, warm the coil, and drain the water away. When something in that sequence fails, ice builds until airflow across the coil stops. We trace the sequence step by step, watch the system attempt a defrost, and find the part that is not doing its job. Then we repair or replace it and confirm a full clean cycle.

What We Check On The Call

We start at the defrost control board and the coil sensor, since a sensor reading the wrong temperature is a common cause of ice that never leaves. We test the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan motor and its capacitor, and the auxiliary heat staging. We look at the drain path under the coil, because water that refreezes at the base defeats every cycle after it. We check refrigerant charge and airflow too, since low charge and a starved coil both create frost patterns that look like a control fault.

How We Decide It Is The Right Call

Ice on the top of the coil that clears on its own is normal winter behavior. Ice that wraps the whole cabinet, thickens over days, or returns within an hour of clearing points to a defrost fault. Constant emergency heat, short heating runs, or a unit that never pauses in cold weather are the other signs we act on. If the compressor is already damaged from running under a blocked coil, we tell you that plainly and lay out repair against replacement before any work starts.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is some frost on my heat pump normal?

Yes. A light layer of frost on the outdoor coil is expected in cold, damp weather, and the defrost cycle should clear it within several minutes. Thick ice that stays for hours or days is not normal.

Can I chip the ice off myself?

Please do not. Chipping risks puncturing the coil or refrigerant tubing, which turns a control repair into a major one. You can clear leaves and debris from around the cabinet, then call us.

Why does my system keep running on emergency heat?

Emergency heat often engages when the heat pump cannot defrost properly or is not producing heat. It works, but it costs more to run. We test the defrost control, sensor and reversing valve to find the cause.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on your porch help us arrive with the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, the indoor coil and blower, then the outdoor unit and electrical side. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why it failed.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We walk you through the fix and any parts involved before we start. Once you say go, we make the repair and confirm the system is holding temperature before we leave your driveway.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for hard summersWe work on attic air handlers in July heat, undersized returns in older subdivisions, and condensers with hail-flattened fins. Those are everyday jobs across the region, so we know where these systems tend to give out first.
  • Air conditioner repair and heating repairOne crew for both seasons. Air conditioning repair when the house won't cool, heater repair and furnace repair when the burners won't stay lit. Same technicians, same records, so nobody starts from scratch in November.
  • We explain the failureYou hear which component failed and what it was doing to the rest of the system. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging unit, we say so and let you decide the timing.
  • Respect for the houseDrop cloths, shoe covers, and the attic hatch closed the way we found it. We keep the work area clean and we tell you honestly when a problem is airflow or ductwork rather than the equipment itself.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
