What a Blank Thermostat Actually Means
A blank or frozen thermostat almost always means the control is not getting power, or it lost the ability to send a signal to the equipment. The thermostat itself is a low-voltage switch. It tells the furnace or air handler to run. So a dead screen points to one of three places: the batteries inside it, the power feeding it from the equipment, or the wiring between the two. Sometimes the thermostat is fine and a safety device upstairs shut the system down on purpose, which cuts the same power the thermostat needs. That last one is common with attic air handlers in summer.
Cause One: Batteries and Settings, the Cheapest Fix
Plenty of thermostats run on AA or AAA batteries, and a weak set gives you a faint display, a frozen screen or nothing at all. Swap them with fresh ones and watch the screen come back. While you are there, check the mode. A thermostat set to Off, or set to Heat in August, will sit there quietly doing nothing and look broken. Confirm the fan setting is on Auto or On, and that the target temperature is actually above or below the room temperature. We have driven out for a no-cool call and found a thermostat still in Heat after a mild week.
Cause Two: A Tripped Breaker or a Full Drain Pan
If new batteries did not help, go look at your electrical panel. The air handler and the outdoor unit usually have their own breakers. A breaker that has tripped will sit slightly out of line with its neighbours. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us, because something is drawing more current than it should. The other frequent cause across the region is a clogged condensate line. When the pan fills, a float switch cuts the low-voltage circuit to protect your ceiling, and your thermostat goes dark. That is the system doing its job, not failing.
Cause Three: Filter, Airflow and Frozen Coils
A filter packed with dust starves the blower, the indoor coil ices over, and the system shuts down on a safety. Older subdivisions with undersized returns hit this faster than most. Pull the filter and hold it to a light. If you cannot see through it, change it. Then walk the house and open every supply vent and make sure furniture is not sitting on a return. Outside, clear grass clippings, leaves and cottonwood fluff away from the condenser so it can breathe. These are all safe checks. If you find ice on the copper lines, shut the system off at the thermostat, run the fan, and call us.
What We Do That You Cannot Do at Home
When we arrive for air conditioning repair or heating repair on a dead thermostat, we meter the low-voltage circuit to see whether 24 volts is arriving at the thermostat at all. That tells us in a minute whether the problem is the control or the equipment feeding it. From there we check the control transformer, the low-voltage fuse on the board, the float switch, the door switch and every safety in the chain. We test the wire run for a break or a short, which happens where staples pinch cable in an attic. We do not guess at a new thermostat and hope. Anything involving gas, refrigerant or high voltage stays with us.

Can I just buy a new thermostat and swap it myself?
You can, but if the old one went blank because of a blown low-voltage fuse, a full drain pan or a broken wire, the new one will be blank too. Test the cause first or you spend money twice.
My thermostat works but the AC will not turn on. Same problem?
Different problem. A live screen means the control has power. The fault is more likely a capacitor, contactor, motor or the outdoor breaker. That needs a technician with a meter, not a thermostat swap.
I smell gas near the furnace. What do I do?
Leave the house right away, take everyone with you, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not flip switches or touch the thermostat. Once the gas company clears it, call us for the heater repair.
