Age matters, but it is not the whole story
A heat pump that has run through ten or twelve summers in this region is not automatically finished. What we look at is how it has been treated. A unit that got filter changes, clear space around the outdoor coil and a couple of tune-ups will often take another repair and keep running. One that has been leaking refrigerant for years, running a dirty coil and freezing the indoor unit has been wearing itself out the whole time. Compressors and coils are what set the ceiling. Contactors, capacitors, fan motors, boards, reversing valve solenoids and defrost controls are ordinary repairs at almost any age.
The fault type tells us more than the model year
Faults fall into two rough groups. Bolt-on parts come off and go back on without touching the sealed system, so a blower motor, a capacitor, a contactor, a thermostat wiring problem or a failed defrost board is a straight repair no matter how old the unit is. Sealed system faults are different. A refrigerant leak in an evaporator coil, a leaking line set buried in a slab or a compressor with a shorted winding means opening the system, and that is where the numbers start turning. We test rather than guess, because a low charge and a bad metering device look similar on a gauge set at first glance.
Parts availability and matched equipment
Some parts are on the truck or at a supply house the same day. Others are model specific, and for older heat pumps the manufacturer may have stopped making them. If a control board or a specialty reversing valve is on a multi-week backorder in the middle of August, we will say so up front so you can decide. Matching matters too. An outdoor heat pump and an indoor air handler are designed to work as a pair. Replacing only the outdoor section and leaving a mismatched coil usually gives you poor performance, higher head pressure and another service call before long.
How we work through it on the visit
We start with the simple things because they are free to check: thermostat settings and batteries, a tripped breaker, a filter choked with dust, debris packed into the outdoor coil, closed or blocked vents. Plenty of no-heat calls end there. If the fault is real, we take readings, find the specific failed component and tell you what it is. Then we lay out the honest picture: what the repair fixes, what else on the unit is showing wear, and whether we expect another failure soon. You get the information and you make the decision. We do not sell equipment to homeowners who came to us for air conditioning repair.
Honest cases where replacement wins
There are situations where we will tell you a repair does not make sense. A failed compressor on an older heat pump that is also leaking at the evaporator coil is really two big repairs stacked together. A unit running an obsolete refrigerant with no parts support is another. So is a system that was undersized or badly ducted from the day it went in, because fixing the mechanical fault will not fix rooms that never got enough air. In older subdivisions we often find returns too small for the equipment, and that is worth correcting whichever way you go. If the system is sound, we repair it and move on.

Which Heat Pump Faults Are Worth Fixing — common questions
My heat pump runs constantly in cold weather. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Heat pumps run long cycles at low outdoor temperatures by design, and that is normal. What is not normal is the outdoor unit iced over for long stretches, or the house never reaching setpoint. Have us check the defrost cycle and charge.
Can you repair just the outdoor unit and leave the indoor one?
Sometimes, for bolt-on parts like a fan motor or contactor. But replacing an entire outdoor section and leaving an older indoor coil usually creates a mismatch, and mismatched equipment runs poorly and fails sooner. We will tell you which situation you are in.
How do I know a repair quote is fair if I cannot see the fault?
Ask the technician to show you the failed part and the readings that identified it. We do that as standard. A capacitor out of tolerance, a shorted motor winding or a leak location can all be demonstrated, not just described.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on your porch help us arrive with the right parts.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, the indoor coil and blower, then the outdoor unit and electrical side. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why it failed.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We walk you through the fix and any parts involved before we start. Once you say go, we make the repair and confirm the system is holding temperature before we leave your driveway.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for hard summersWe work on attic air handlers in July heat, undersized returns in older subdivisions, and condensers with hail-flattened fins. Those are everyday jobs across the region, so we know where these systems tend to give out first.
- Air conditioner repair and heating repairOne crew for both seasons. Air conditioning repair when the house won't cool, heater repair and furnace repair when the burners won't stay lit. Same technicians, same records, so nobody starts from scratch in November.
- We explain the failureYou hear which component failed and what it was doing to the rest of the system. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging unit, we say so and let you decide the timing.
- Respect for the houseDrop cloths, shoe covers, and the attic hatch closed the way we found it. We keep the work area clean and we tell you honestly when a problem is airflow or ductwork rather than the equipment itself.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
