If You Smell Gas or Rotten Eggs, Leave First
Get everyone out of the house before you do anything else. Do not flip switches, do not use the thermostat, do not unplug anything, and do not look for the source. Once you are outside and away from the building, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, treat it the same way and stay outside until the fire department or utility clears the house. After the utility has shut off the gas or given you the all clear, call us and we will inspect the furnace, heat exchanger and venting before it runs again. That order matters. Life safety first, diagnosis second.
Sharp, Electrical or Plastic Smells: Shut It Down
An acrid smell like hot plastic, melting insulation or an overheated motor is different from dust. That usually means a blower motor is drawing too much current, a capacitor is failing, or wiring has overheated somewhere in the air handler. Turn the system off at the thermostat. If the smell keeps building or you see smoke, switch the breaker for the heating and cooling equipment to off and call 911 if there is any sign of fire. Then call us. Do not open the electrical panel or the blower compartment. High-voltage work is not a homeowner job, and a hot connection can look fine and still be arcing behind the panel.
When It Really Is Just Dust
The most common burning smell we get called about is dust burning off a heat exchanger the first time the furnace runs after a long cooling season. It is dry, faintly like a hot iron, and it fades within about thirty minutes of runtime. Open a couple of windows for airflow and let it clear. If it is gone the next time the system cycles, you are fine. What is worth checking is the filter. A filter left in for six months loads with dust that scorches on the coil and pushes the smell through every vent. Swap it, confirm supply vents are open, and see if the smell returns.
What Not to Do While You Wait
Do not restart a system that smelled like burning plastic or gas just to see if it does it again. Do not spray air freshener into a return to cover the smell, because you lose the one clue a technician has. Do not tape over a vent, do not remove the burner cover, and do not touch the gas valve or refrigerant lines. Safe checks are limited to thermostat settings and batteries, looking for a tripped breaker, changing the filter, clearing leaves and grass away from the outdoor unit, and making sure vents are not blocked by furniture or rugs. Anything past that, leave the panels on.

How long should a dust burning smell last?
Usually under thirty minutes of furnace runtime at the start of the season, and it should not come back on later cycles. If it lingers past that or returns days later, have it looked at rather than waiting.
Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?
Yes. A loaded filter restricts airflow, lets the heat exchanger run hotter, and scorches trapped dust. Change the filter, then see if the smell clears over the next couple of cycles. If not, call us.
Why do my vents smell burnt when the AC runs, not the heat?
In cooling mode a burning smell usually points to the blower motor, a failing capacitor or overheated wiring rather than dust. Turn the system off at the thermostat and book air conditioning repair before running it again.
